Why I Adore Thrifting

I am part of the small minority of girls my age that when going shopping will opt for a decent charity shop rather than a usual high street store. I love to "thrift" and love entering a store not knowing what gem I am going to find. Today I wanted to share my opinions and why I think more people should give it a try, the majority of my fashion posts are based on thrifting so I thought it makes sense explaining my feelings on it all!

Prices

Firstly I am a student and I do not have a disposable income to spend on the newest clothes and trends. Since starting university my wardrobe has almost tripled in size and there is no way that could be possible if I bought my clothes from the high street. I love having new outfits to wear and I love experimenting with my ever changing style which due to the low prices thrifting allows me to do. I believe you do not have to break the bank to look fabulous and thrift shopping is a great way to do this.

Uniqueness

One of the most appealing factors of thrifting for me is finding unique items of clothing. One of my major fashion pet peeves is turning up to an event where everyone is wearing the same thing. Before I discovered my love for thrifting, I was once at a night club in a play-suit I had purchased from Primark that day. Me and at least 5 other girls were wearing the exact same outfit and because I am a super conscious person I felt mortified. Do not get me wrong I love to follow trends but I also love to have my own personal style, this is why I fell in love with thrifting. I can still adapt trends to fit my style but I also know I am not going to turn up to a party wearing the same outfit as a few girls there. Not to mention you can find some beautiful pieces that you would not find on the high-street.

Sustainability

It was not until recently I knew about the affects fast fashion is having on the enviroment. I had always known about climate change and the impact waste is having but since studying for my degree and learning more about the supply chain, it has really shown me the bigger picture. I view thrifting as a way of recycling old unwanted clothes that could of ended up on the landfill. Statistics show that we no longer buy clothes as an investment but more to wear once or twice then throw out. I do understand buying an item for one occasion then not wearing it again but instead of throwing it out, charity shops would love the donations. Like I previously mentioned my style does change and I will only wear certain items once or twice, but when I am done with them I will up-cycle or donate. Thrifting is ultimately a small way of helping the enviroment and causes less textile waste.

Up-cycling

Up-cycling is my newest hobby that I really enjoy doing, Up-cycling is simply taking something old and making it new. Like I mentioned previously I sometimes will wear an item twice then get bored of it. Up-cycling allows me to restyle a garment into something I love. Since learning how to sew, I now actively seek new materials when I go thrifting, it is cheaper than going to a fabric shop and it is less wasteful!

My Outfit

I wanted to feature a completely thrifted outfit just to show how easy it is to find high quality fashionable items. Every thing including the shoes is secondhand and cost me under £5. I want to especially mention the top I am wearing, it is a 1970's top I purchased from a Mooch Vintage kilo sale. It cost me around £3 and if it was hanging up in a store today it would not look out of place. I used this to demonstrate how trends come back around and how I put together a timeless outfit for the fraction of the cost of what you can find on the high-street.

Overall I think there is a bad stigma people my age have about thrifting . I have had girls compliment me on outfits and when telling them I thrifted the majority of the items have turned their noses up at me. I am fortunate enough to have friends who love to come thrift shopping with me and love it for the same reasons I do. I hope this post explains more about why I enjoy it so much and maybe encourages others to give it a go!

  1. I have bought a few items from the charity shop myself and I was very happy with what I found there. You are right, there are always unique clothing items in a charity shop and they come with such a cheap price. And some of them are actually new, they never have been worn.

  8. I don't think I've ever thrift shopped but now I'm saving to move out it might be time for me to start. I will say that I no longer buy outfits just to wear them once or twice, I will happily wear something to dead regardless of whether people have seen me in it before. I do love the idea of up-cycling though, need to get my hands on a sewing machine again
